Letter to the editor: City not planning long term for drive-in site

We realize that the drive-in will be sold for commercial building, but we are perplexed that our city government leaders are not thinking about long-term planning.

We are writing this letter in regard to the drive-in here in Cottage Grove which is slated to become a Walmart.

We realize that the drive-in will be sold for commercial building, but we are perplexed that our city government leaders are not thinking about long-term planning. We believe this site should draw people not only from Cottage Grove but from other communities as well to bring in additional revenue to our city.

There are Walmarts in Hastings, Woodbury, Inver Grove Heights and West St. Paul. People from other communities won’t be traveling to our city to go shopping at Walmart. We believe a business such as a Costco would draw people not only from the cities already mentioned but also from Prescott, Red Wing, St. Paul Park, Newport and beyond.

We have nothing against Walmart. We just think there are so many other businesses that would make more sense to have here in our community.

The Planning Commission meeting regarding the Cottage View/Walmart site will be held soon at City Hall. We encourage you to come and let your voice be heard.
