A Cottage Grove man told police it was a guilty conscience that brought him back to the scene of a crime.

The man, who was witnessed stealing headphones and a cellphone charger April 16 from the Woodbury Walmart, was confronted by store security outside the store. He claimed at the time that he didn’t know what the worker was talking about and left.

Three hours later, the man returned to the store with the merchandise. The man told police he felt guilty and had come back to return the items, valued at $28.75. He said he reached the decision after telling his wife of the theft.

The man was cited for theft.
