Park girls track and field: Floysand, Gorres shine for Wolfpack in early meets

The Park girls track and field team competed in a pair of meets last week – the Suburban East Conference Relays on Tuesday, April 10, at Roseville High School and the 2012 Hudson True Team meet in Hudson, Wis., on Friday, April 12.

Park finished in eighth place in the nine-team SEC Relay meet, where all events were run in a relay format, then earned fourth place in the eight-team Hudson meet – though Park head coach Matt Maher said the team was somewhat shorthanded.

“We had kind of a skeleton squad,” Maher said. “It was a Friday and it was cold. Bu, a lot of girls had excuses why they couldn’t be there.”

For those who did compete at the Hudson meet, Park sophomore Katelyn Floysand had a standout performance, earning first place in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 48.73 in the finals. Floysand’s time was nearly three seconds faster than the second-place finisher and put her in seventh on the Park honor roll.

“Katelyn is really tearing it up,” Maher said. “She’s been great to have on the team this year. It’s kind of exciting to have somebody so young, doing really good things already.”

Another underclassman, Park eighth grader Allison Gorres also stood out at the Hudson meet, taking second place in both the 100-meter dash and 200-meter dash. Gorres had a time of 26.57 in the 200 and a time of 12.98 in the 100.

“Gorres had a really good meet,” Maher said.

Also in the sprints, Park sophomore Temi Ogunrinde finished in fourth place in the 200 with a time of 27.24 and earned sixth place in the 100 with a time of 13.33 as well. Park junior McKay Zurn and senior Nicole Laabs showed what they can do in the high jump, with each clearing 4 feet, 8 inches, to take second and third in the event, respectively. Somerset’s Sarah Krig won the event, going over 4-10.

In the 3200-meter run, Park eighth grader Cameron Anderson finished in fifth place with a time of 12:13.33 and freshman Rebekah Schulte took eighth place with a 13:00.73 time. Also, junior Annie Lisson earned 13th in a time of 13:47.73.

In addition, Park senior Megan Bresnahan earned fifth place in the triple jump with a leap of 30-01.00 in the finals and sophomore Jaclyn Glazier earned fifth place in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:43.16. Also, in addition to her times on the track, Ogunrinde helped out the Wolfpack in the field, taking sixth place with a leap of 14-04.25 in the long jump and earned ninth in the shotput with a toss of 28-07.25. Park’s Alea Berube and Hannah Schwartz finished ninth and 11th, respectively, in the discus toss.

Park scored 616 points in the True Team event. Hudson won the meet with 840.50 points.

Prior to the Hudson meet, the Wolfpack traveled to Roseville to take on its fellow conference squads in the annual SEC Relays. Park scored 51 points in the meet, taking eighth place. Stillwater won the meet with 166 points. The Wolfpack’s top events were the 400-meter medley hurdles where the team of Morgan Schank, Gabrielle Fitzgerald, Karen Banks and Floysand earned fourth place, the 400-meter relay team of Banks, Gorres, Ogunrinde and Sharmaine Turner took fifth place and the 800-meter relay team of Ashley Sutton, Ogunrinde, Gorres and Turner took fifth place.

Park competed in an invitational at Rosemount on Tuesday, after the Bulletin went to print. Next, the Wolfpack hosts its own invitational on Friday, April 20, against Hastings, Tartan, Hudson (Wis.), and FAIR School at Wolfpack Stadium.

“We’re trying some different things and we’ll go for it on Friday and see how it goes,” Maher said.
