Theater owner: Cottage View Drive-In's future uncertain even without Walmart proposal

The Cottage View Drive-In – a fixture in Cottage Grove since 1966 – is in jeopardy even if Walmart doesn’t build a store on the site, the theater’s owner said.
The 2012 drive-in season is safe, owner Gerry Herringer said, giving fans of the Cottage View another shot at catching a summertime flick under the stars. This will be the drive-in’s 47th season.
If Walmart’s store plan is approved by the city, construction likely could begin in the fall.
Even without the Walmart proposal, however, Herringer said the theater’s future is uncertain. The drive-in needs a new, $70,000 digital movie projector in the near future if it is to continue operating, he said, something unlikely to happen considering the annual uncertainty over the Cottage View’s fate.
“It’s in serious doubt either way,” said Herringer, the drive-in’s owner since its inception. “It's too bad, but I guess that's progress."
