Suspicious activity

A Newport woman who lives in the 900 block of Third Avenue reported Feb. 21 that there were footprints all around a vehicle parked in the driveway. She believed someone had been in the area overnight. It was not known whether anyone attempted to get into the vehicle.

A Newport man reported Feb. 21 that he noticed boot prints on the ground near his vehicle parked in the 1200 block of Fifth Avenue. No entry was made to the vehicle.

Theft

A Newport man reported Feb. 21 that part of a deer hunting ladder stand had been stolen from outside a home in the 1300 block of Fourth Avenue. Value: $50.

Suspicious man

A Newport woman called police Feb. 20 after her husband approached a man who was walking in a wooded area near the 1100 block of 12th Avenue. When the man was approached, he climbed up a tree. The caller said the man may have climbed the tree because a very large Labrador dog was barking at him. Police later found the man walking on Hastings Avenue near the Newport Cemetery. The man said he had been looking to buy land as soon as he sells his Cottage Grove home. He was advised not to trespass.

Domestic

Police were called about 11 a.m. Feb. 20 to a home in the 1600 block of 10th Avenue on a report of a fight. A woman reported that she believed an altercation between two Newport residents had been physical, but at least one of the two people involved denied a physical altercation. No arrests were made.

Gas leak

Newport police and firefighters were called to 17th Street and 10th Avenue about 5:20 p.m. Feb. 19 for a reported gas leak. A caller reported there was liquid gas spraying from a pipe valve at a pump station near the intersection. The Newport Fire Department handled the call.
