Park wrestling: Wolfpack win; three place at 9th grade state tourney

The Park wrestling team split a pair of duals in its final home meet of the season – a triangular against Mounds View and Henry Sibley on Thursday, Feb. 2, at Park High School, then had a trio of wrestlers reach the podium at the 9th Grade League State Tournament.

The Wolfpack beat Suburban East Conference foe Mounds View 42-20 and fell to non-conference foe Henry Sibley 31-31 (Sibley won tie-breaker) in their final home match.

In the win over the Mustangs, Park won the first 10 matches of the contest, before Mounds View took the final four matches.

Park sophomore Austin Thurmes won 12-8 at 106 pounds, eighth-grader Collin LaBrosse won with a pin at 113 pounds, freshman Jake Lanik won with a pin at 120 pounds, freshman Dan Duval won 5-0 at 126 pounds, senior David Ayers won 13-2 at 132 pounds, sophomore David Giadyu won 14-5 at 138 pounds, senior Kenny Gerhardt won with a pin at 145 pounds, freshman Cory Flaata won 4-2 at 152 pounds, senior D’Monte Farley won 13-5 at 160 pounds and senior Scott Johnston won 8-7 at 170 pounds.

In the loss to section opponent Henry Sibley, LaBrosse won with a pin at 113 pounds, Duval won a forfeit, Farley earned a pin at 160 pounds, senior Nate Baumann won 3-2 at 182 pounds, sophomore Cody Linssen won 10-0 at 195 pounds and senior Tyler Liljedahl won with a pin at 220 pounds.

After the triangular Park sent a number of wrestlers to the 9th Grade League State Tournament at Champlin Park High School on Saturday, Feb. 4.

At state, eighth grader Zach Wills earned third place at 170 pounds, LaBrosse took fourth place at 106 pounds and Flaata earned fifth place at 152 pounds to lead the Wolfpack contingent.
