The 2012 Strawberry Fest will be reeling in the years.
The event’s organizers chose 23-year-old Cottage Grove resident Lauren Barfels’ entry “Going Back In Time” as the theme for next summer’s festival, choosing a retro approach dreamed up by the recent Minnesota State University, Mankato graduate and aspiring graphic designer.
Barfels was named the winner of the fifth-annual Strawberry Fest Logo Contest earlier this month and will serve as Grand Marshal for the annual summer festival’s June 17, 2012 parade.
“Why not go back and look at Strawberry Fests of the past?” Barfels said she thought while brainstorming theme ideas. “What were the themes that people came up with then?”
What she came up with is a vintage-looking logo that’s a departure from recent Strawberry Fest themes like “Fun in the Sun” and “Strawberry Fiesta.” A 2006 Park High School graduate, Barfels earned a graphic design degree in Mankato this past spring and is searching for a full-time job in the design field.
With a father who operates a printing press, “I’ve always liked art,” Barfels said. She is currently working part-time for School District 833 and doing freelance design work that she posts to her website, laurenbarfels.com.
A long-time Cottage Grove resident, next June won’t be her first time taking part in the Strawberry Fest parade – she marched in one as a teen with a local dance studio. But it’s not the parade that next summer’s Grand Marshal likes best about Strawberry Fest, the event that draws thousands of people each June to Kingston Park.
“It’s the sense of community,” Barfels said. “I like seeing everybody come together as a community.”
