Fire destroys Cottage Grove garage, damages home

The homeowners escaped uninjured as crews spent more than an hour dousing flames. There were approximately five or six small explosions caused by acetylene tanks in the garage.

A late-afternoon fire destroyed a Cottage Grove garage Tuesday and damaged the adjacent home.

There were no injuries reported in the blaze at 6870 84th St.

Crews were called to the home at 4:54 p.m. after the homeowners reported smoke from the garage. There were visible flames upon arrival, Cottage Grove firefighter Ben Mair said.

The homeowners escaped uninjured as crews spent more than an hour dousing flames. There were approximately five or six small explosions caused by acetylene tanks in the garage. Acetylene is a fuel used for welding.

The cause of the fire was not immediately known.

The home is located west of Highway 61 and near Norris Square and Fire Station 1.
