20 years ago, historic blizzard buried south Washington County
Today marks the 20-year anniversary of the Halloween blizzard of 1991, a year that saw trick-or-treaters dressed in costumes pulled over snow suits and winter boots, and public works crews caught off-guard by the huge snowfall more than seven weeks before the official start of winter.

A wet snow started falling early on Oct. 31, 1991 as south Washington County readied for trick-or-treating and came down from the Minnesota Twins' World Series win a few days before.
By the time it was over a few days later, nearly 30 inches of snow had fallen in the Twin Cities metro area and a freak, early-season blizzard had set the snowstorm standard for years to come.
