St. Paul Park Mayor John Hunziker has a challenger in his bid for re-election this November.
Bar owner Keith Franke has filed to run in this fall’s mayoral race, presenting the incumbent Hunziker with an opponent for the first time since he defeated then-Mayor Don Mullen in 2003. Hunziker won re-election unopposed in 2007; he had previously served as St. Paul Park mayor from 1986 to ‘91.
Incumbent city council members Tim Jones and Jennifer Cheesman had also filed with the city clerk’s office as of Thursday. Jones is seeking a third term on the council; Cheesman, who was appointed last month to serve the remainder of former council member Steve Hunstad’s term, is seeking her first full term.
The filing period for city office opened on Aug. 2 and closes Aug. 16. Election Day is Tuesday, Nov. 8.
