Senior activities

The South Washington Senior Center in Cottage Grove offers activities for seniors, 50 and older, who live in Cottage Grove, Newport, St. Paul Park and Woodbury.

The South Washington Senior Center in Cottage Grove offers activities for seniors, 50 and older, who live in Cottage Grove, Newport, St. Paul Park and Woodbury.

Many come to the Center every day for a hot lunch. Others stop by to play cards, exercise or try new games such as Pickleball and Farkle.

Seniors take day trips and long distance tours, and there’s dancing, singing, Wii computer games, a weight loss group and Bingo. Tax assistance, defensive driving classes, grief support, a book club, quilt group, billiards and horseshoes are also available.

The Red Hat Society REGALS group is based at the Senior Center for women who gather every month for socializing, parties and theater trips. The REGALS Chorus practices monthly and entertains with enthusiasm at a variety of sites.

Intergenerational projects at the Center pull together seniors and students in School District 833. Project GO is Grandparents Organized and members teach hand sewing to all third-grade classes. Participants — both seniors and students — get to know one another and count on each other for new knowledge.

The Senior Center is located near the intersection of Jamaica Avenue and Highway 61 in Cottage Grove. It is open from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday. Music Jam runs from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. on Thursday. Senior Dining serves nutritious meals at noon Monday through Friday for $3 a meal.

The South Washington Senior Center is located in the District Program Center, 8400 East Point Douglas Road S., in Cottage Grove. For details, call Rebecca Kropelnicki at (651) 458-6650 or look at www.cecool.com.
