Warning sirens

Outdoor warning sirens sound for severe thunderstorms or when tornadoes are sighted. The sirens are tested at 1 p.m. on the first Wednesday of each month. When they sound at any other time residents should move to a lower level of the house, such as a closed storage area, utility room or bathroom with no windows.

Compost sites

By state law, yard waste is not to be placed in the regular trash receptacles. Instead, it should be taken to one of south Washington County’s three compost sites:

Cottage Grove — Located at the intersection of 95th Street and Glendenning Road, open from March or April (opening date will depend on weather) into November.

Hours from March through September are 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday; 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturdays. From October through the site’s closure in November the site is open from 8 a.m. to dusk Monday through Friday and 9 a.m. to dusk Saturday. The site is closed on Sundays. The site re-opens for one weekend in early January for Christmas tree disposal.

Newport — Located at 1100 Bailey Road. Hours are 3:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Wednesdays and Fridays, and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturdays. Open from second Saturday in April to second Saturday in November.

St. Paul Park — Located at 13th Avenue and First Street. Hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturdays, from 1:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sundays, and 1:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesdays. Open from April to November.

Court services

A hearing officer is available on Wednesdays from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., at the Washington County Service Center-Cottage Grove, located at 13000 Ravine Parkway South. You can make an appointment by calling (651) 430-6279.

Crime prevention groups

The Cottage Grove Crime Prevention Advisory Board is a nonprofit citizens organization that plans and coordinates crime prevention initiatives. For details, call (651) 458-6025.

Curfews

Cottage Grove, Grey Cloud Island Township, Newport and St. Paul Park all have separate curfew ordinances that must be followed. Contact each city for more curfew information.

Licenses

The Bulletin License Center, located at 8599 West Point Douglas Road in Cottage Grove, is the place to go for vehicle registrations, driver’s license renewals, vehicle title transfers, DNR registrations and notary services. Hours are 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday, closed Saturday and Sunday. The phone number is (651) 459-9877. The website is www.bulletinlicensecenter.com.

Parking

Cottage Grove and Newport on-street parking ordinances state that vehicles cannot be parked on any city street Oct. 1 through April 30, between 2 a.m. and 6 a.m. St. Paul Park’s winter parking ban runs from Nov. 1 through April 1 and prohibits street parking between 2 a.m. and 6 a.m.

At all other times parking is allowed if the vehicle does not interfere with the removal of ice and snow from city streets.

Grey Cloud Island Township does not allow parking at any time in the winter on township roads.

Recycling

Cottage Grove

The City of Cottage Grove has licensed trash haulers that are required to offer recycling pickup. Haulers empty recycling bins placed curbside in conjunction with regular trash pickup. Bins are provided by haulers.

Tennis Sanitation picks up recyclables every week and Waste Management picks up every other week.

Newport

The City of Newport encourages residents to recycle through its licensed haulers. Recycling bins can be picked up at City Hall.

St. Paul Park

The City of St. Paul Park urges residents to recycle on designated trash days by licensed haulers.

Public Works will deliver bins to residents’ homes. For information, call (651) 459-3730.

Recyclable items

Place items loosely in recycle bins. Do not put items such as shredded material in plastic bags. Put those items in open paper grocery bags.

Recyclable items include paper, mail, newspapers including ads, magazines, cardboard from cereal and cake mix boxes with liners removed, tops of pizza boxes only, paperback books, hardcover books with covers removed, phone books with covers removed, metal, glasses not broken, aluminum and plastic including beverage containers with tops removed (no need to remove labels).

From time to time, haulers will contract for additional recyclables. Call haulers for clarification on recyclable items.

Hazardous waste

Cottage Grove Public Works accepts used automotive oil at 8683 West Point Douglas Drive.

Available are 2.5 gallon jugs used to haul oil to the site and can be picked up weekdays from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Construction materials

Resource Recovery Technologies in Newport accepts some construction material. For information, call (651) 768-6600.

Concrete and construction material can be taken to SKB Landfill in Inver Grove Heights. For more information, call 651-450-9022.

Watering restrictions

Cottage Grove — Residents with addresses ending in an even number may water on the even-numbered days of the month. Residents with addresses ending in an odd-number may water on the odd numbered days of the month. On the 31st day of the month, any resident may water.

Newport — No watering restrictions.

St. Paul Park — Residents may water lawns on odd and even days corresponding to their house number. The regulations are in effect year-round.
