No. 6-ranked Forest Lake handed the Park wrestling team a 55-12 defeat in a Suburban East Conference dual meet on Thursday, Jan. 20, at Park High School.
Park had three wins against the mighty Rangers. At 119 pounds, Park eighth-grader Emilio Huerta earned a pin over Andrew Meyers at the 3:47 mark. Park senior Kenny Gerhardt earned a 9-5 decision over Russell Wedger and senior Ben Gallogly won a 4-0 decision over Forest Lake’s Brian Paulson.
“They are a very big and physical team and they have a great shot at beating Hastings for the SEC crown and getting through the tough Section 7 for team state,” Park head coach Jim LaBrosse said. “I really like their style of wrestling and I hope our guys can learn from this loss. To compete at a high level of wrestling in the state of Minnesota we need our wrestlers to get more mat time in the offseason by wrestling Freestyle, Greco, attending camps and increasing our strength and conditioning. This sport can be very unforgiving, but for those who put in the effort it will pay off.”
Park next returns to the mat on Saturday, Jan. 29, at the Rosemount quadrangular against Rosemount, Hopkins and SEC opponent Roseville. Varsity and junior varsity wrestling action starts at 10 a.m. at Rosemount High School.
