Q&A with Tessa SikichPark senior gymnastics team captain talks Gophers, going to state and ‘One Tree Hill’
By: Patrick Johnson, Staff Writer, South Washington County Bulletin
What’s your favorite sports memory?
My favorite sports memory for gymnastics would have to be my eighth-grade season when we made it to state. Going to state was just such an amazing experience and it inspires me to work hard now to make it back there again!
Do you have one individual performance at a meet that sticks out as being a great one?
I don’t necessarily have a specific performance that I feel was a great one, but this season however, at our meet at Melrose, I did receive my first 9! It felt great to know that I was the one receiving that score.
Do you have one individual performance at a meet that sticks out as being a bad one?
I do have a performance that sticks out in my mind for this question and I am glad that I can look back at it now and laugh. I don’t remember what season it was, but one year at our meet at the Lakeville Invite I was competing beam and fell four times and got a 4.4 as a score. That’s definitely not something I want to repeat!
Do you have any pre-game rituals?
Well, it depends on the type of meet. For our normal conference meets, I bring the younger girls home from school, come home do my hair and then make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich all while dancing around and listening to my iPod. It’s not necessarily a ritual but I do it every meet. For our weekend invitationals, some girls on the team and some coaches usually meet at Perkins at about 4 or 5 in the morning for some breakfast before the long bus rides. This is something that I have done before every weekend invitational since I was on the team in seventh grade.
Do you have a nickname?
I do kind of have a nickname, it’s “Tesser.” I don’t really know how I got it and I don’t think it means anything really, but my former teammate Ali McDowell gave it to me a couple years ago. Otherwise the girls just call me “Tess” or “Tessa.”
What do you like to do off the field?
Hangout with my boyfriend and my friends and go shopping and all that good stuff! When I’m not doing that I am usually working one of my two jobs or doing something for school.
What’s your favorite TV show and/or movie?
My favorite TV show is definitely One Tree Hill! I have not missed one episode in all its eight seasons! I can’t tell you my favorite movie, because I watch so many and love so many it’s too hard to narrow it down.
What’s your favorite sports team? (besides your own)
I absolutely love the Minnesota Twins or any Gopher sports teams pretty much! I love watching sports and I’ve always wanted to be a Gopher. I actually just got accepted to the U of M, which is my college of choice!
What’s your favorite sport? second favorite sport?
My favorite sport is definitely gymnastics. I’ve been in it since I was 2 years old and I’ve lived around it because of my dad being a coach. Track is my second favorite sport. I’ve been in it since I was a seventh grader and I was actually two places away from making it to state last year in discus. Football definitely comes in a close third.
What are your future goals?
My future goals include attending the U of M, being a football cheerleader, getting a degree in elementary education to be a third or fourth grade teacher, and then a coaching minor — almost following in my Dad’s footsteps.
What advice do you have for young athletes?
Do anything that makes you happy! There are always going to be hard times and hard days, but once you push through all of that nothing can ever stop you. Follow your dreams and don’t for a second let anyone tell you that you can’t do anything.
