The Hope Christian Academy boys basketball team is back for another season.

Under head coach Steve Zimmer, in his third season with the team, the Eagles hope to improve upon last year’s record, when the team went 0-17 overall and 0-9 in the Christian Athletic League.

In addition to Zimmer, Hope Christian brought in new assistant coach Michael Smith. “We will continue to have a young team,” Zimmer said. “We will be relying on the leadership of our upper classmen to play the majority of the minutes and score the majority of our points.”

Gone from last year’s squad is Sam Zimmer, a 2010 graduate who led the team in scoring, rebounding, assists and blocks a year ago from the point guard position.

However, the team returns seniors Joe Pahr and Aaron Anderson and junior Philip Gibbens, along with Charles Smith, Caleb Anderson, Josh Allen, Jonah Venegas, Simon Hoekstra and Andrew Dembouski in hopes of forming a strong nucleus and filling Sam Zimmer’s shoes.

“It will be interesting to watch the scoring and rebounding strength of Joe Pahr and the number of steals Aaron Anderson will accumulate with his cat-like quickness,” coach Zimmer said. “We will be anticipating to see which one of our lower classmen will step up to help with the team leadership.”

Zimmer said he hopes the team gets off to a strong start with December games against Coon Rapids Christian on Dec. 3; Victory Christian on Dec. 10 and Chesterton Christian Academy on Dec. 13.
