More new faces in Newport?

Two years after voters in Newport initiated sweeping change on the city council, a long-time incumbent's retirement means more turnover could be on the way.

Two years after voters in Newport initiated sweeping change on the city council by ousting all three incumbents up for election in 2008, a long-time incumbent's retirement means more turnover could be on the way.

Councilwoman Pauline Schotmuller's decision not to seek re-election leaves council member Corb Hopkins — appointed to the council in Jan. 2009 to fill Tim Geraghty's council seat after he was elected mayor — as the only incumbent on the ballot.

So, for the second consecutive election cycle, two new faces could be elected to the five-person council when Newport voters head to the polls Tuesday.

The candidates for Newport City Council are: Hopkins, Ernie Berget, Steven Gallagher, Anthony Mahmood, Tracy Rahm and Tom Stettner. Katy McElwee-Stevens will also appear on the ballot, but withdrew from the race in September.
