Newport City Council candidates voter guide: Tom Stettner

A 32-year resident of Newport, Stettner says his familiarity with the city makes him a good fit for city council

Tom Stettner

Age: 54

Lived in Newport: 32 years

Occupation: Mechanic, owns small lawn services business

Civic experience: Former mayoral candidate

Why he’s running: “I’ve ran businesses in here … (the city) will work with you on some things and they wouldn’t work with you on others … I’m not happy with a lot of the stuff that’s happening over the years. I race cars and do a lawn service … You know, it’s not that difficult to do this stuff if you’re a regular common person. You’re supposed to be working for the people.”

Why are you the best choice for Newport City Council?

I think I am one of the best choices because I've lived in this town for 32 years. We raised the first generation and now the second generation has moved back into town. I've met really terrific older citizens and gained a lot of knowledge from them.

Newport businesses have taken a hit in recent years. How should the city jump start business growth and expand its tax base?

I ran a business in Newport. I know some of the problems small business owners face. Its a tough situation for all. We need to find how to make it easier for small business owners to get their needs met without the current problems.

How do you see the planned park and ride and transit facility at the old Knox site shaping Newport’s future?

It will make it easier to commute from the city, making home ownership more attractive. New businesses might like to locate near the busy terminal.
