Newport City Council candidates voter guide: Tracy Rahm

Rahm says his business background and planning commission experience make him voters' best choice

Tracy Rahm

Age: 48

Lived in Newport: 17 years

Occupation: Information technology executive

Civic experience: Planning Commission chair

Why he’s running: “I want to make larger contributions to my community, so I am running for Newport City Council … I feel key issues for Newport are how to attract new business and investment opportunities to the city now that the Wakota Bridge project is completed, while at the same time preserving Newport’s heritage and maintaining its small-town feel.”

Why are you the best choice for Newport City Council?

I have the best combination of business executive background and Newport specific public service experience.  I'm currently the chair of the Newport Planning Commission, and very knowledgeable of current issues and the economic development needs of the city.  I have strong leadership skills and can effectively communicate and sell the strengths and opportunities of Newport to prospective business developers.

Newport businesses have taken a hit in recent years. How should the city jump start business growth and expand its tax base?

Businesses have taken a hit due to the Wakota bridge construction project and the lingering effects of the general economic recession.  The city should work with a public relations strategy firm to develop a comprehensive and cohesive marketing plan to to clearly communicate Newport's strengths and opportunities to potential businesses and developers. Newport should also work on a city beautification  program for city areas near Highway 61 to improve the perception and attractiveness of the city in the near-term.

How do you see the planned park and ride and transit facility at the old Knox site shaping Newport’s future?

As chair of the Newport Planning Commission, we updated Newport's comprehensive plan to change the zoning regulations to allow for the Red Rock commuter rail line and other transit related activities.  This commuter transit station can anchor future business and residential development in Newport for the longer-term.
