Wind gusts nearing 50 mph knocked out power to a St. Paul Park elementary school overnight and toppled a pine tree onto a Cottage Grove home.
A power outage was reported at Pullman Elementary school in St. Paul Park on Wednesday morning. School officials said power was restored by noon.
Steve and Debby Kaufhold were watching TV at their Cottage Grove home on Tuesday evening when they heard a crash just after 10 p.m.
“We just thought it was the wind blowing extra hard, or maybe a sonic boom,” Debby Kaufhold said. It turned out to be the pine tree in their front yard, which fell onto the house in the 8800 block of Inman Ave.
Only one small branch smashed through the roof, she said, and that didn’t come through the ceiling inside. “We were ready to get rid of that tree anyway,” she said. “We won’t miss it.”
High wind warning issued
The National Weather Service issued a high wind warning for most of central and southern Minnesota, including south Washington County. According to the advisory, winds gusting up to 55 mph can be expected, with sustained winds of 30 to 40 mph in most places.
The weather service warns downed trees and power lines could result from the high winds, as well as minor damage to structures. Driving conditions for large trucks and lightweight vehicles could also be difficult.
