Some Washington County residents were evacuated late Thursday after a one-vehicle crash caused a gas line to rupture and start on fire.
The driver of the vehicle sustained minor injuries, but no one else was reported injured as a result of the incident.
According to the Washington County Sheriff’s Office:
A passerby reported a one-vehicle crash just before midnight on 75th Street west of Jamaca Avenue in Grant, north of Lake Elmo. The vehicle was on fire.
The driver told authorities he lost control of his vehicle and crossed over the westbound lane of 75th Street and crashed in the ditch and stopped on its side. A natural gas pipeline was ruptured in the crash and blowing natural gas ignited.
The sheriff’s office and Mahtomedi fire fighters evacuated homes within a mile of the incident. The Red Cross was contacted to assist evacuees, but they made other arrangements.
Xcel Energy was called to shut off the gas. The driver was released at the scene. The crash is being investigated.
