Some filings in for Cottage Grove, Newport council races

The candidate filing period for Cottage Grove and Newport City Council candidates opened Tuesday, and candidates are already signing up.

Candidates who have filed to run for Cottage Grove's two open city council seats include: Tanweer "TJ" Janjua, Pat Rice and Dave Thiede. The seats up for election this fall are currently held by Rice and Mark Grossklaus, who previously announced he would not seek re-election.

Candidates who have filed to run for Newport City Council include Corb Hopkins, Anthony Mahood and Tom Stettner. The seats up for election in Newport are currently held by Pauline Schottmuller, who has said she will not seek re-election, and Hopkins, who was appointed to fill the council seat vacated by Tim Geraghty when he was elected mayor.

Candidates have until Aug. 17 to file.
