Nowak: School board election matters

This November will mark an “off year” election. We’re not electing a president, not even a senator, so why bother?

Your school board represents one of the lowest rungs in the political process, but like the foundation of your house it supports all of the upper levels.

The local schools provide education to the majority of our children. Grammar school provides our children with a foundation in learning, which is built upon through high school.

The biggest slice of our local tax goes to support our schools. This election represents your opportunity to affect your children’s education and the spending of your tax dollars.

I have chosen to run for one of the openings on the District 833 School Board because I believe I can do a good job in representing both the taxpayers and the children.

My education is extensive; I have attended nine schools of higher education. I’ve done this as it has provided shortcuts in job advancement, but also because I’ve always enjoyed learning new skills.

I have also had some teaching experience both in college as a teaching assistant in aerospace engineering and as a part-time adjunct professor in a community college in New Jersey.

I have been an engineer and a manager of engineering and manufacturing personnel for 40 years.

This has given me insight and a keen understanding of the management of focused teams and the planning necessary to accomplish specified goals. I intend to champion “Continuous Improvement” in the governance of our school system.

I have no agenda; I plan to enter this process with an open mind and I will keep focused on the big picture.

The Bulletin gave all of the District 833 School Board candidates the opportunity to write a 300-word letter to the community. Candidates who did not submit letters to the editor are Walt Lyszak of Cottage Grove, Gina Taft of Cottage Grove and Mike Thissen of Woodbury.
