The Cottage Grove City Council last week donated nearly $700 in gambling fund contributions to a Cottage Grove woman recovering from a fight with a flesh-eating virus.

Mayor Myron Bailey and fellow Cottage Grove City Council members handed over $691 in proceeds from a fundraiser held for Rebecca Eckes. The Cottage Grove mother of five underwent dozens of surgeries earlier this year after contracting flesh-eating bacteria following a hysterectomy.

The nearly $700 is the 10 percent of the net profit from the Cottage Grove Athletic Association’s Eckes fundraiser that was paid per city ordinance to the city’s Gambling Contribution Fund. The CGAA requested the money be donated to Eckes.
