Cottage Grove guardsman killed in Iraq

A Cottage Grove member of the Minnesota National Guard was killed Thursday in an attack from insurgents on their unit using indirect fire, according to the Minnesota National Guard.

A Cottage Grove member of the Minnesota National Guard was killed Thursday in Iraq in an attack from insurgents on their unit using indirect fire, according to the Minnesota National Guard.

Spc. Carlos E. Wilcox IV, 27, of Cottage Grove died in the attack along with Spc. Daniel P. Drevnick, 22, of Woodbury and Spc. James Wertish, 20, of Olivia.

The soldiers were killed by indirect fire — meaning with mortars, rockets or artillery — at 9:15 p.m. Iraq time on Contingency Operating Base Basra.

All three Soldiers were assigned to Stillwater-based 34th Military Police Company, 34th infantry Division.
