Newport’s new city administrator won’t have much time to get his feet wet before tackling a touchy issue after the city council tabled a proposed water and sewer rate increase last week.

Council put off a decision on the rate hikes — needed, officials say, because the city’s water and sewer fund is running a deficit — until the June 18 meeting at the request of public works staff who wanted city administrator Brian Anderson to have input on the changes.

Anderson, selected last month after a months-long search, took over the city’s top staff post Monday.

The recommended rate changes would increase the average Newport resident’s bill by roughly $34 per year, according to a memo from city engineer John Stewart. The average Newport resident consumes 30,000 gallons of water per quarter.
