Due to a Minnesota State High School rule, the Park-Woodbury and Centennial girls lacrosse teams tied for third place in the state after playing to a 9-9 draw after regulation in the third place game of the 2009 state tournament on Thursday, June 4 at Mounds View High School.

In the game, the Royal Pack (11-7-1) erased a four-goal deficit to tie Centennial and earn a share of third place.

The Cougars (13-3-1) jumped out to a 3-0 lead and led 6-2 with 1:15 remaining before halftime. However, between the end of the first half and the start of the second half, Park-Woodbury scored seven of the game’s next eight goals and took a 9-7 lead with 8:14 left to play.

But, the Cougars evened things with a pair of goals with under three minutes to play and the game was called a tie after the final seconds of regulation ticked off the clock.

According to the Minnesota State High School League, MSHSL policy provides for overtime play only when advancement in the tournament is required or to determine a champion.

In the tie, Park senior Kayla Guanella led the Royal Pack with four goals. Park juniors Erin Spinks and Kelby Land each added two goals, while junior Natalie Arcand had one goal. Centennial was led by senior midfielder Cassandra Hoyez with five goals.

The Royal Pack must now say good-bye to eight seniors, including Guanella and senior captains Amanda McNeese and Kelsie Anderson.
