Pollution control agency chooses cleanup plan for 3M Cottage Grove siteThe Minnesota Pollution Control Agency has chosen a plan to clean out contaminated soil and sediment at the 3M Cottage Grove site.
The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency has chosen a plan to clean out contaminated soil and sediment at the 3M Cottage Grove site and prevent further spread of perfluorochemicals into the river.
The agency is recommending 3M enhance its groundwater pump-out system, which prevents solvents from migrating into the river, so that it also stops perfluorochemicals from getting into the river.
Also, contaminated soil on the site, and sediment in the cove along the river where the plant’s wastewater is discharged, would be excavated and taken to SKB Landfill in Rosemount where it would be placed in an engineered, long-term containment cell being built to hold contaminated waste materials excavated from the 3M disposal sites in Cottage Grove, Oakdale and Woodbury.
There will be a public meeting on the proposed cleanup at 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 27, at Cottage Grove City Hall. A one-hour open house will precede the meeting.
The proposal is open for comment through June 19.
