Yelland wins award for Newport history preservation

The Newport Heritage Preservation Commission has named M. Virginia Yelland the seventh annual Betty Haugen Memorial Heritage Preservation Award recipient in recognition of her contributions to the preservation of Newport History, according to a press release.

Yelland, a Newport resident since the 1930s, wrote “The Unique Legacy of Red Rock and Newport, Minnesota, 1837-1989” and served on the city’s heritage preservation advisory commission from 1992 to 2006, according to the press release.

She owns Dilaram Cottage, which is the sole surviving building from the Red Rock camp meeting grounds and is a designated Newport Heritage Landmark, according to the press release.

Yelland will receive her award at an upcoming Newport City Council meeting.
