Letter: Not all kids are athletes

By: Teresa Prater, Cottage Grove,

I read the letter “No place for kids to gather?” published Aug. 20 with interest.

I then did go to the city Web site and sure enough we do have those special parks. Thank you for the information.

ow my next question is, what is there for kids who are not into sports to do in Cottage Grove?

Yes, sports are the great American pastime, but there are kids out in Cottage Grove that have other interests.

Some like to read, so yes there is the library.

Some like music — where are they to go to hang out and talk and pursue their interests with friends?

Yes there are churches aplenty, but you know there are many people out there who do not believe in organized religions.

It would be nice to have a place for these kids to meet, hang out in a safe environment, play some video games, or something else. Especially six months of the year when we have cold winter weather.

A community center would be a great asset to our community.

I no longer have young kids in Cottage Grove, I really don’t need to worry about this, but Cottage Grove is a growing community.

I grew up here. I raised my kids here. I like the location. It is my home and has been for a long time. A community center could also be used by adults to get together, form groups and have a meeting place. A community center would make the community feel like one.
