Wrestling: Okada takes third at Ninth Grade State
Eighth-grade wrestler Ty Okada took third place at the Ninth Grade State competition held on Saturday, Jan. 26 at Blaine High School, making him the highest-placing East Ridge wrestler ever in the team's history at the tournament.
Okada competed at the 94-pound division, winning a thriller in his first match against Curtis LeMoir of Prior lake 4-2 in overtime.
Okada was able to score a 7-0 victory in his quarterfinal match against Gram Nistler of St. Cloud Tech before falling to the eventual champion Keaton Schorr of Kasson-Mantorville in a defensive struggle by a score of 2-0.
In the third-place match, Okada defeated Nicholas Carline of Osseo by a score of 6-4.
Okada's performance makes him the highest placer for East Ridge at Ninth Grade State.
Emilio Huerta placed fifth at last year's tournament at 132 pounds.
This also marks the third year East Ridge has been competing in the Ninth Grade League.
