Work is set to begin next week on a major road project in Woodbury that planners say will close Washington County's busiest intersection for nearly a week while crews replace aging pavement.

The Washington County Board last week approved a contract with C.S. McCrossan Construction, Inc., to complete work on the nearly $3.26 million improvement of busy Valley Creek Road (County Road 16) in Woodbury from Bielenberg Drive to Woodbury Drive. County bonds issued last year will pay for the road work.

The project will replace pavement; upgrade signage, traffic signals and road striping; improve pedestrian ramps; and complete trail and storm sewer upgrades.

Work will also include the closure of the Valley Creek Road-Radio Drive intersection -- Washington County's busiest, said county transportation engineer Jacob Gave -- for nearly a week to speed the completion of pavement upgrades and limit the length of delays for motorists at the intersection. Crews will work around the clock to complete work at the intersection during the planned six-day closure, Gave said.

Right turn lanes will remain open at the intersection. The county has said access to all businesses and residential areas will be maintained but may be limited at times.

Construction is set to begin July 23 and wrap up by October, Gave told commissioners.

County officials said they plan to reach out in a variety of ways to keep drivers informed of project progress during the expected three-month timeline, including a project page on the county's website (www.co.washington.mn.us), email updates and a Twitter account devoted to project updates.
