Woodbury VFW walks-off in win over West St. Paul
Woodbury VFW’s offense couldn’t get much going at home last Thursday.
Weberg threw a complete game shutout as he allowed just three hits and Woodbury knocked off West St. Paul 1-0.
Weberg had to be nearly perfect, because Woodbury’s offense generated squat through the first six innings. But finally, in the home half of the seventh it was able to break through.
Fittingly, it was Weberg who led off the rally with a single to start the inning. He scored the game-winning run four batters later on Brandon Trifiletti’s ground ball to short.
Charlie Nordby did most of the heavy lifting for Woodbury at the dish. He went 3-for-3 at the plate.Offense was far from an issue earlier in the week for Woodbury. The VFW cruised by Mendota 12-6 behind a solid performance from its bats last Tuesday.Tyler Gustafson led the way with two hits and three RBI. Also playing a key role in the offense was Ronnie Sweeny. Sweeny reached base all five times he stepped into the batter’s box, collecting three hits and being struck by two pitches. Sweeny swiped two bases, as well.Nick Gehrt and Andrew Weil combined to get the job done as they pitched around four Woodbury errors to secure the victory.Eight Woodbury batters collected hits last Wednesday in an 11-hit offensive barrage that led the VFW squad past Highland by a 10-3 tally.Gerht was a catalyst all game for Woodbury’s offensive success. He went 2-for-2 and walked once while scoring twice.The bats failed Woodbury last Friday, as the VFW crew collected just six hits and fell 3-2 at the hands of Eagan Red.Weil was solid on the mound for Woodbury, as he allowed just two earned runs in a complete game effort, but the offense couldn’t provide enough support to turn the stellar outing into a victory.Gustafson’s RBI base knock in the fourth inning tied the game at two runs apiece, but Eagan scored the go-ahead run in the fifth, which Woodbury had no answer to.Adam Paluch was one of Woodbury’s few offensive bright spots. He contributed two of the team’s six hits and scored a run.
