Woodbury SuperTarget plan extended, but retailer not planning to build
The developer with a stalled SuperTarget plan was granted a permit extension, but the retailer said it has no plans to build in Woodbury at least through 2010.
The Woodbury City Council on Wednesday approved a one-year extension, through Oct. 8, 2010, for Woodbury Developers' building plan in the Commerce Hill Development.
Woodbury Developers owns a nearly 40-acre parcel west of Woodbury Drive and between Commerce Drive and Tamarack Road. It had planned a 185,000-square-foot SuperTarget store to anchor a shopping center, but Target Corp. backed off earlier this year.
City officials said the extension is a routine request, particularly in a rough economy.
But the retailer has not announced a plan to open a second Woodbury store -- and one with a full grocery section - before the end of next year, after the extension expires.
Target plans 12 new stores nationally in 2010, spokeswoman Jill Hornbacher said. None of those is in Minnesota.
"We're still interested in building another Target in the Woodbury area, but it would be premature to confirm when that would be," Hornbacher said.
