BUSINESS WOMEN -- Mary Jo Sherwood of E-Women's Networking will speak on "Effective Networking" at the next Cottage Grove Area Women's Business Development Group, 7:45 to 9 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 18, at Norris Square, Presbyterian Homes, 8200 Hadley Ave. in Cottage Grove. MICROSCOPE MAGIC -- Carpenter Nature Center in Denmark Township is offering a program for families to investigate everyday items. Families are invited to stop in anytime between 1 and 4 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 19. If you go, take a pair of water shoes to collect aquatic samples.
ELK'S FLEA MARKET -- The Stillwater Elks Lodge is hosting its annual flea market-garage sale-craft sale from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 19, at 1905 Greeley St., in Sillwater. STEAK FRY -- Newport United Methodist Church invites friends and neighbors to its annual steak fry -- chicken is also available -- from 4 to 7 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 19, at the church, 1596 11th Ave., in Newport. Tickets are $10 for adults and $6 for children, ages 3 to 12.
HARLEM AMBASSADORS -- The New-Park Lions Club basketball team will meet the Harlem Ambassadors, at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 19, at Woodbury High School, for a community fundraiser. The event is family friendly. Tickets at the door are $11 for adults and $9 for students and seniors, 65 years and older. Kids, 4 and younger, are free.
BAND FLAPJACKS -- Boosters for the East Ridge Raptors band will serve flapjacks from 8 to 10 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 19, at Applebee's Neighborhood Grill and Bar, 10150 Hudson Road, next to Wal-Mart in Woodbury. Tickets are $6 at the door.
ST. RITA'S FALL FESTIVAL -- St. Rita's fall festival is scheduled Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 19 and 20 at the church, 8694 80th St., in Cottage Grove. Activities will begin at 4:30 p.m. Saturday with a ham dinner followed by a polka Mass at 5 p.m., Bingo and a country store. The festival will continue Sunday after 10: 30 a.m. Mass with a live auction at 1 p.m., the St. Rita challenge for kids, country store, farmer's market, kids' games, a golfing game, food and prizes.

GREY CLOUD ISLAND RIVER RUN -- The Grey Cloud Island 10K River run begins at 8 a.m. on Sunday, Sept. 20, at Aggregate Industries' Larson Quarry, 10120 Grey Cloud Island Drive S., in St. Paul Park. The fee is $20. All proceeds will be donated to Human Services Inc. Registration is available on line at www.raceberryjam.com or www.active.com.
FREE HISTORIC BALL GAME -- A base ball game played by 1860 rules between the Denmark Demons and the St. Croix Base Ball Club will begin at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 20, at the Denmark Township Hall, 90th Street and Oakgreen Ave. If you go, take a lawn chair or blanket.
FREE DINNER, SCHOOL SUPPLIES -- Families are invited to a free community dinner from 4:30 to 6 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 20, at Community United Church of Christ, 1145 Summit Ave. in St. Paul Park. The church will also have free school supplies for last minute shoppers.
POLICE EXPLORERS OPEN HOUSE -- Hastings Police Explorers are holding their First Nighter at 6 p.m. on Sunday, Sept 20, at the Hastings Police Department, 150 Third Street East, in Hastings. SOCCER PIZZA -- The Park High School boys soccer booster club is hosting a pizza night at Carbone's Pizzeria, 70th Street and County Road 19 in Cottage Grove. The restaurant will donate 15 percent of all proceeds between 4 and 9 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 21.
