Weekend planner: Heritage Days this weekend
THURSDAY, AUG. 13
ROYAL MUD STOMP --Heritage Days royalty and '09 candidates, along with royalty from surrounding communities, will prepare the courts for the festival's mud volleyball tournament. Many may be dressed in their old prom dress. Stomping begins at 5 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 13, near the Public Works Building on Fifth Street.
FROM THE HEART BENEFIT -- A "From the Heart" garage sale for the family of 13-year-old Danny Hauser will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 13 and 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 14, at 8354 Hemingway Ave. in Cottage Grove. The sale is being hosted by Dan and Marla Zwakman who have been working with the Hauser family throughout the ongoing saga of Danny's off-and-on struggle with chemotherapy treatments.
SATURDAY, AUG. 15
HERITAGE DAYS PARADE -- St. Paul Park's Heritage Days parade will take to the road at 11 a.m. starting at 13th Avenue, turning north on Summit Avenue and west on Broadway Avenue. Activities have been planned all day Saturday and Sunday along Broadway Avenue, including a carnival, food, Elvis, games for kids, outhouses races, classic car show, arts and crafts, a flea market and mud volleyball and horseshoe tournaments.
PANCAKES BEFORE PARADE -- Newport Masons invite everyone to have breakfast from 8 to 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 15, before the Heritage Day parade begins. Tickets -- sold at the door -- are $6 for adults and $4 for youth, ages 5 to 12. Children, 5 and younger, eat free. The Masonic Center is located at the corner of Broadway and Summit avenues.
SNAKES AT CAMPFIRE -- Dodge Nature Center will present a campfire program on snakes, at 7:15 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 15, at St. Croix Bluffs Regional Park in Denmark Township. Visitors will meet some live home town snakes in a hands-on program that will test misconceptions, according to a press release. The park is on County Road 21, between County Roads 76 and 78, in Denmark Township. The program is free and will be held in the campground amphitheater. Parking is $5 per vehicle.
SUNDAY, AUG. 16
PANCAKES FOR TROOPS -- The American Legion Post 98 Women's Auxiliary is hosting a pancake breakfast from 8 to 11 a.m. on Sunday, Aug. 16, at the Legion Hall, 328 Broadway Avenue. Proceeds from the breakfast will be dedicated to sending care boxes to troops serving overseas and the Friends in Need Food Shelf.
COMMUNITY BAND WILL PLAY FAVORITE MARCHES -- The South Washington County Community Band will play favorite marches and show tunes at 2 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 16, at Veteran's Park, between Fourth and Fifth streets, north of Broadway Ave., in St. Paul Park, as part of the 25th Heritage Days celebration.
MONDAY, AUG. 17
HERITAGE DAYS CORONATION -- The 2009 Heritage Days pageant begins at 7 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 17, at Hope Community Church, 8300 Hyde Ave. in Cottage Grove. Admission is a $5 festival button. Winners of the button raffle will be announced after the pageant.
