Weekend planner: East Ridge open house, dedication Sunday

STAR WATCH -- Mike Lynch, a meteorologist with WCCO radio who also writes a weekly stargazing column in the St. Paul Pioneer Press, will present an outdoor astronomy program called Minnesota Starwatch at 7:15 p.m. Friday, Sept. 25, at Big Marine Park Reserve. Participants will learn about the constellations and the stories behind them. They will also use large reflecting telescopes, including a 20-inch telescope that is among the largest in Minnesota. Stargazers may wish to bring along a lawn chair or blanket. Big Marine Park Reserve is a half mile north of the intersection of Manning Avenue (County Road 15) and County Road 4 in May Township. FIRE HOUSE GARAGE SALE -- A fire house garage sale is scheduled from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 26 and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 27, at the St. Paul Park Fire Station, 600 Portland Ave. Firefighters will serve their famous walking tacos on Saturday and Sparky the Fire Dog will greet kids.
PAT KNOP MEMORIAL TOURNAMENT -- The second annual Pat Knop Memorial four-person scramble will take place on Saturday, Sept. 26, at River Oaks Golf Course. Check in is 12:30 p.m. with a shotgun start at 1:30 p.m. The fee is $85 per person, which includes the golf, dinner, a hat and a silent auction. Cash prizes will be awarded the top team in three categories: open, family and co-ed.
RAPTOR RELEASE -- A raptor release will take place at 11:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 26 at Carpenter Nature Center in Denmark Township. The free event is co-sponsored by the center and The Raptor Center of the University of Minnesota. Pets are not allowed. Freshly picked apples and raspberries will be available for sale.
CLASS OF '69 -- The Park High School Class of 1969 will meet for its 40th reunion at 6 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 26, at the Cottage Grove VFW Post 8752 Red Barn, 9260 East Point Douglas Road. Jim Gutzman's band, "High Brow & The Shades," will entertain beginning at 9 p.m. Admission is $10 at the door.
GRAND OPENING -- Century College, in White Bear Lake, will host the grand opening of its new transportation-training center at 14386 Hudson Road S., off Interstate 94 and Manning Avenue in Afton, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 26. A brief program begins at 10:45 a.m. Prospective students are welcome to attend.
AFTON ART IN THE PARK -- Afton's annual two-day Art in the Park event is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 26 and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 27 at the town square. More than 50 vendors will showcase fine art, pottery, woodwork, jewelry, sculpture and fiber. There will be live music, a classic MG Car Club show and food.

OPEN HOUSE, DEDICATION AT EAST RIDGE -- The official dedication of District 833's East Ridge High School will run from 1 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 27. The dedication ceremony, including performances by East Ridge students, is scheduled at 2 p.m. in the auditorium. Visitors are invited to tour the school on their own or in guided groups. The City of Woodbury will provide hayride tours around the entire 320-acre complex outside the Activities building entry. To reach East Ridge, go north on Radio Drive and turn right at Hargis Parkway, near the Bielenberg Activity Center.
