Weekend planner: Benefits for Rein in Sarcoma, Rebecca Eckes
FRIDAY, MAY 15
POPPY DAY -- Veterans from Cottage Grove VFW Post 8752 and members of the American Legion Post 98 Auxiliary in St. Paul Park will give away Buddy Poppies at area businesses on Friday, May 15. Any donations received go into a relief fund to help veterans, widows and their families in an emergency.
NEWPORT FIRE RAFFLE -- The Newport Fire Department is hosting its annual meat raffle from 4 to 7 p.m. on Friday, May 15, at the Clover Leaf Bar and Grill, on Hastings Avenue, in Newport. Proceeds from the event will help purchase equipment, according to Tom Ingemann, assistant fire chief.
LEUKEMIA BENEFIT GARAGE SALE -- Melissa Abdouch, of St. Paul Park, and her entire family are hosting their 17th annual garage sale to raise funds for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. The sale is scheduled from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday, May 15, and 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, May 16, at 8091 Innsdale Ave., in Cottage Grove.
SATURDAY, MAY 16
REIN IN SARCOMA -- A fundraiser for the "Rein in Sarcoma Foundation" in the name of longtime area teacher Jerome Detviler is scheduled from 4 p.m. to midnight on Saturday, May 16, at the Cottage Grove VFW Post 8752 Red Barn, 9260 East Point Douglas Road, in Cottage Grove.
FAMILY FUN DAY -- The St. Paul Park Athletic Association will hold its 3rd annual Family Fun/Picture day from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, May 16 at Heritage Park, 13th and Laurel avenues, in St Paul Park. Activities, open to current and prospective members, will include photos, a moonwalk, dunk tank, baseball clinics, various sports games and a DJ. Hamburgers, brats and hot dogs can be purchased at the park.
REBECCA ECKES -- A spaghetti dinner benefit for Rebecca Eckes is scheduled from 4 to 7 p.m. on Saturday, May 16, at the American Legion Post 98 Hall, 328 Broadway Ave., in St. Paul Park. Tickets range from $5 to $8.
SUNDAY, MAY 17
PANCAKE BREAKFAST -- A pancake breakfast fundraiser and kids' carnival to benefit Rebecca Eckes will take place from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sunday, May 17, at the Cottage Grove VFW Post 8752 Red Barn, 9260 East Point Douglas Road. Tickets are $6 for adults and $4 for youth, 4 to 12 years old.
