Weekend planner: Area Memorial Day events
This weekend promises to be quiet in south Washington County as veteran's organizations and churches remember military personnel who have served and are still serving the country.
The LeDuc Historic Estate, located at 1629 Vermillion St. in Hastings opened for the season on Wednesday, May 26 and will offer tours, special events, competitions, shows and markets through Oct. 31. For details, call (651) 437-7055 or go to the website at www.dakotahistory.org.
Washington County campfire programs will begin at 7 p.m. on Saturday, May 29, at Lake Elmo Park Reserve, north of Woodbury, and St. Croix Bluffs Regional Park in Denmark Township, just south of Cottage Grove. Members of Cottage Grove VFW Post 8752, American Legion Post 98 in St. Paul Park and Voiture 33 (40/8) will lead Memorial Day services beginning with breakfast at 7 a.m. at the legion hall, 328 Broadway Ave. in St. Paul Park. After breakfast veterans, family members and guests will travel by bus to cemeteries and river sites around south Washington County.
Lt. Col. John J. Morris, who recently returned from his third tour of duty as Army chaplain in Iraq, will be the featured speaker beginning at 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 29 for a Memorial observance at St. Mary's Church-Basswood Grove, in Denmark Township. The observance will begin with a prayer service plus special music inside the historic church, followed by a ceremony in the adjacent cemetery.
