Weekend planner: Afton May Fair, flower sales this weekend

Events for the weekend begin Thursday night at a free pizza picnic for families at Kingston Park. Cottage Grove is hosting an informational meeting at the picnic for anyone interested in organizing their own Night to Unite -- formerly National Night Out. Other weekend activities include raffles, brat fests, the Afton May Fair and garage and flower sales.

Cottage Grove families who want more information about organizing their own neighborhood Night To Unite celebration are invited to an informational picnic from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, May 20, at Kingston Park, in Cottage Grove.

Preregistration is recommended but not required. Free pizza, cookies and beverages will be available while supplies last, according to a press release.

The Newport Fire Department is holding its annual meat raffle fundraiser from 4 to 7 p.m. on Friday, May 21, at the Cloverleaf Bar and Grill, 2146 Hastings Ave. in Newport. Proceeds from the raffle will assist the department in acquiring equipment that's not covered by the current budget, according to a press release. Everyone is invited to participate.

A Touch of Home, the ministry that sends care packages to troops serving overseas, is hosting a brats, hot dog and hamburger fundraiser at Von Hanson's Meats, 9040 Inwood Ave. in Cottage Grove. Serving hours are 4 to 7 p.m. on Friday, May 21 and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, May 22. On Sunday, May 23, volunteers will be grilling from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The 18th annual Afton May Fair, featuring more than 60 fine arts and crafts vendors, will take place from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, May 22, and from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday, May 23. For a complete list of events and times, visit www.AftonMayFair.com.

The Park High School girls volleyball team is holding a garage sale from 9 to 4 p.m. on Saturday, May 22, at 1471 Summit Ave. in St. Paul Park. Hot dogs and cookies will be available for shoppers to buy.

Perennials from the gardens of parishioners at St. Rita's Catholic Church will be on sale from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, May 22, at the church, 8694 80th St. in Cottage Grove.

Plants will include ferns, hosta, cone flowers, stella odoro lilies, ground covers, salvia, liatris, peonies and more, according to a press release.

The 16th annual flower sale at Peaceful Grove United Church is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Thursday and Friday, May 20 and 21 and 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, May 22, at the church at 8600 90th St., in Cottage Grove.
