Walmart land deal near; Cottage Grove soon to approve related East Point Douglas Road reconstruction
Nearly a year after Walmart submitted blueprints to build a 177,000-square-foot store on the former Cottage View Drive-In property, plans to close on a real estate agreement are on the horizon.
The Cottage Grove Economic Development Authority briefly discussed the update last week. The anticipated closing date is April 3, the same day the Cottage Grove City Council is expected to award bids for the $2.2 million reconstruction of East Point Douglas Road near the entrance to the Walmart.
The reconstruction project includes roadway, drain and sewer improvements on a stretch of the frontage road near the VFW Post 8752 Red Barn. Walmart will cover the costs of much of the roadwork, which could begin as early as this spring.
Walmart purchased the 22-acre lot along Highway 61 near Keats Avenue last year from longtime Cottage View Drive-In owner Gerry Herringer.
The retail giant anticipates a 2014 opening of the Cottage Grove location.
