VFW baseball: Cottage Grove takes down Woodbury
It's been a season of ups and downs for the Cottage Grove VFW team so far this season and last week was no exception.
The Post 8752 team beat rival Woodbury 8-6 on Tuesday, June 30 at Woodbury High School, but followed up with a 12-3 loss to Roseville on Thursday, July 2.
Against Woodbury, Cottage Grove (4-6) scored five runs in the final two innings to earn the come-from-behind win.
"It was a well-played game by our guys," Cottage Grove head coach Dave Gunter said. "We played a really clean game and hit the ball well."
Down 5-3 with two innings to play, the Post 8752 team won the game with a pair of runs in the top of the sixth inning, then took the lead with three runs in the top of the seventh inning and, although Woodbury loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of the seventh, held on for the win.
In the seventh, John Tolkinen had an RBI and Max Bundschu ripped a two-run single to give Cottage Grove its three runs.
Pitchers Jordan McGowan and Jordan Jeske each threw three innings and allowed three runs, while Lucas Maluski came in for the seventh inning and allowed one run, but closed the door on Woodbury.
Tolkinen led the way at the plate for Cottage Grove, going 3-for-4 with two RBI.
In the loss to Roseville, Cottage Grove carried its momentum from the win over Woodbury and led 4-3 after the top of the fourth inning. However, the wheels came off at that point as Roseville scored four runs in the bottom of the fourth and went on to win 12-3 over the Post 8752 team.
In the game, Cottage Grove had seven hits. Maluski led the way at the plate going 2-for-3 with a triple and an RBI.
"That's kind of how the season's been," Gunter said. "We go from one great game to a not-so-great game."
Cottage Grove played at Mahtomedi and West St. Paul after the Bulletin went to print. Next, the Post 8752 squad hosts Mendota on Thursday, July 9 at Park High School, then travels to Miesville on Saturday, July 11 to take on Cretin Gold at the Miesville Mudhens' Jack Ruhr Field.
