A South Dakota man was arrested Saturday in Newport on suspicion of drunken driving after he fled police and his vehicle caught on fire.
Shortly after 1 p.m., Cottage Grove police officers were called to the 7100 block of 80th Street in Cottage Grove on a report of an SUV hitting a curb and running over a rock.
Police found the driver northbound on Highway 61.
According to law enforcement officials, the man sustained speeds upward of 70 miles per hour before taking the Glen Road exit in Newport. Flames were present under the vehicle, police said.
The SUV, which was traveling the wrong way down Glen Road, stopped and the driver allowed officers to extract him from the vehicle. He was identified as Obrien Blickem Baker, 51, of Winner, South Dakota.
Police said they detected a strong odor of alcohol on Baker. He was arrested and transported to the Washington County jail, where he was booked on suspicion of drunken driving, felony fleeing a peace officer, refusing a DWI test and failing to stop after causing an accident.
