UPDATED: Bigham not seeking re-election
State Rep. Karla Bigham will not seek re-election in 2010, the two-term Cottage Grove DFLer announced in a press release Monday.
Bigham, first elected to the Minnesota House of Representatives in 2006, said she is considering options that include attending law school when she steps away from state politics after her term expires next January.
"It's a good time in my life to explore these options and consider going back to school," Bigham, 30, said in an interview Monday.
Bigham succeeded current state Sen. Katie Sieben, DFL-Cottage Grove, as the District 57A representative to the Minnesota House in 2006 and won re-election in 2008, defeating Republican challenger Kurt Perkins.
She was first elected to public office in 2004, winning a seat on the Cottage Grove City Council at the age of 25.
Bigham said a return to politics is a possibility down the road.
"I would never close the book on that option," she said. "Being a public servant, and being able to represent the community (I) grew up in is a high honor and something I enjoyed a lot."
