Unusual weather caused gas smell in school
Thursday's unusual weather was to blame for the gas smell that caused the afternoon evacuation of the Crestview Elementary and Nuevas Fronteras school building, according to an e-mail from the school's assistant principal Laura Loshek.
Students and staff left the building around 1:30 p.m. Thursday when several teachers and staff members reported smelling gas in classrooms and office areas, the e-mail says.
The Cottage Grove Fire Department responded, and allowed everyone to re-enter the building within 20 minutes.
"Although this event was an inconvenience and interrupted instructional time, it did provide an opportunity to practice emergency evacuation procedures," Loshek said.
