Tee time: South Washington County golf courses opening
Golfers, rejoice. And shake the rust off your swing.
One south Washington County golf course is already open, with another set to open Friday and a third next week.
The greens and fairways have weathered the harsh winter well, said representatives at three area 18-hole courses.
Mississippi Dunes Golf Links opened last week. Sunday’s warm weather drew at least 100 golfers to the links, a representative said. The public course is located along the Mississippi River near Grey Cloud Island.
City-owned River Oaks Golf Course in Cottage Grove opens at 11 a.m. Friday, April 11. Derek Holmes, assistant golf pro, said the greens have been freshly cut and the course is in good enough shape for golfers to play summer rules.
“Everything’s a go,” he said. “All 18 greens are open. The golf carts are ready. It will be just like a normal summer day out there.”
Afton Alps in Hastings will open its 18-hole golf course sometime next week, marketing manager Amy Reents said. They decided on a rain delay due to the wet weather predicted this weekend.
“We’re in good shape,” she said. “With the rain forecast for Friday, Saturday and Sunday, we just kind of decided that we’re not going to pull the trigger.”
The resort, which is spread across 300 acres of bluffs along the St. Croix River, underwent a $10 million renovation last year. That includes the ski chalet that doubles as a golf clubhouse in the summer.
