Tax service buys former county HRA building in St. Paul Park
For over two decades, St. Paul Park business owner Greg Langbehn has occupied just about every building on the city’s main thoroughfare.
Greg’s Tax Service has been a well-established tax preparation company along Broadway Avenue — including a few other spots in the city — since the early 1980s. But with business booming, Greg, along with his sons, Justin and Jon, purchased the 5,100-square-foot former Washington County HRA building, moving just two blocks down from their most recent location.
“I think it’s safe to say that I’ve been up and down this road for the last 22 years,” Greg said.
Greg, a certified tax preparer since 1979, has operated his business in a number of office spaces on Broadway; the front-end of a former movie store, space inside what is currently Gerelick Manufacturing and Hairitage Salon, even branching out briefly to Hastings Avenue. But for the last several years, his office has been in a 1,000-square-foot building at 545 Broadway.
“There just wasn’t room for all three of us,” Justin said. “If (Jon) would have a client and (Greg) would have a client and I would have a client, you could hear everything they were talking about. It just wasn’t a conducive work environment.”
Justin and Jon joined their father’s business in 2009, bringing along their spouses, making Greg’s Tax Service a “true family business,” Justin said. And since coming on board, they said business has doubled.
With more clients coming through the doors, the Langbehns were looking for something more. Knowing the former Washington County HRA building was on the market, they were quick to act.
Roughly five times the size of their former office, the large 17-room building, complete with a conference room, reception area and foyer, has space to accommodate the rapidly growing business.
“It’s just a more professional building,” Jon said.
“And it allows us to take the next step toward owning the family business,” Justin added.
The extra square footage also gives the Langbehns an opportunity to rent out the additional offices. Eleven of the 17 offices are currently for rent, they said. And three have already been spoken for, with plenty available for other tenants.
“We want this to be a business center, of sorts,” Justin explained, “where every single company is here to help each other out. We have a financial guy coming in, it would be great to have a basic or all around insurance guy. It would be great to have a tax lawyer.”
“But if you want to rent an office, we will certainly rent you an office,” Greg added.
All three Langbehns are certified tax preparers and perform a variety of tax-related filings for either individuals or small corporations and businesses. Greg’s Tax Service also does payroll for a handful of other businesses.
With the upgraded facilities, Greg reiterated that customers, new and old, can expect the “same great service” with no intention of raising prices.
“This new building is a huge improvement,” Justin said. “We’re waiting for people to just be blown away.”
To celebrate the recent move, Greg’s Tax Service will hold an open house from 1-3 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 16, following the Heritage Days parade.
The new location is 321 Broadway Avenue, next to Park Cafe.
