Student disciplined for bringing replica toy gun to Cottage Grove Middle School
Cottage Grove Minnesota 7584 80th Street South 55016

A south Washington County sixth-grader was disciplined after he brought a replica handgun to school.

The Cottage Grove Middle School student brought the toy cap gun to school on Tuesday, Jan. 26, in his pants pocket. He took the gun out of his pocket in the lunchroom to adjust it and while he did that other students noticed him holding it and informed lunchroom staff, said Gail Griffith, a Cottage Grove police officer and school resource officer who works at the middle school.

Griffith said the boy said he put the cap gun in his pocket because he was in a rush headed to school that day.

The toy gun shoots caps but looks like a handgun, except for an orange tip on the barrel.

"It looks like a really small revolver," Griffith said. "It looks like it would be a gun."

Police had no prior contact with the student so he did not receive a juvenile citation but he was referred to the Youth Service Bureau for a general assessment, Griffith said.

The boy also faced school consequences. District 833 Communications Director Barb Brown said the district only could say that "the student was disciplined according to the rights and responsibilities' policies of the district."

Those policies ban students from bringing to school weapons or objects that look like weapons. Consequences include immediate out-of-school suspension, notification of police and parents and possible expulsion.
