Storm makes for sloppy start in Cottage Grove area
The overnight mix of snow, sleet and rain slowed the Wednesday morning commute and left south Washington County residents and plow operators with a heavy, wet mess.
The storm started with rain Tuesday afternoon and turned to a icy, slushy mix in the evening. A small amount of snow fell, and the National Weather Service called for a possibility of 2 to 4 inches of snow during the day Wednesday in the Cottage Grove area.
City plows Wednesday morning were clearing streets of snow and puddled water.
The Cottage Grove Police Department and the State Patrol responded to four area accidents between midnight and about 8 a.m. Wednesday, but no serious injuries were reported. One vehicle was reported in the ditch on Highway 61.
At mid-day Wednesday the State Patrol had reported 73 crashes in the Twin Cities area, 139 vehicles off the road and two jackknifed semitrailers.
Xcel Energy reported three power outages in St. Paul Park and another in Newport. Some 70 Xcel customers near Manning Avenue north and south of 70th Street were without power.
To the north, areas of Woodbury lost power, and Woodbury Middle School closed for the day.
