St. Paul Park man dies after gun 'inadvertently discharged'
A 20-year-old St. Paul Park man died after a gun “inadvertently discharged,” police said Monday.
Regino M. Nitti was shot early Saturday in his apartment. St. Paul Park Police Chief Mike Monahan said the preliminary investigation showed that an acquaintance of Nitti was responsible and that a gun inadvertently discharged.
Police were dispatched at 1:45 a.m. on a report of a shooting at 1136 Fifth St. Officers arrived to find Nitti dead inside apartment 4 of the six-unit complex.
There were witnesses and persons of interest, and Monahan said investigators were still trying to determine what took place.
Guns were found in the apartment.
Monahan did not release further information about the shooting early this week, citing an ongoing investigation by his department. The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension and the Ramsey County medical examiner were assisting on the investigation.
The completed case will be forwarded to the Washington County Attorney’s Office for review, Monahan said.
The apartment complex, near the corner of Pullman Avenue and Fifth Street, faces Axelrod Park. Monahan said it has not been a problem address for police in the past.
There was no threat to public safety, Monahan.
