Longtime St. Paul Park firefighters will soon get a bump in their pension payouts.

The City Council unanimously approved an increase from $2,200 per year to $2,500.

The last increase in pensions was in 2007.

John Solberg, president of the St. Paul Park Fire Relief Association, said getting council approval was the last step in implementing the increase.

Firefighters with 10 years of service receive a partial benefit starting at 60 percent of the benefit amount. And firefighters with 20 years of experience are considered fully vested and receive 100 percent.

City Administrator Kevin Walsh said while the city is not required to contribute to the FRA, it has in the past.

If the association is ever unable to fully fund the account, the city would be required to contribute.
